Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a method of inserting sperm straight into the uterus to match ovulation. It’s done by the use of fine catheters to increase the chance of fertilization. The intention of IUI treatment is to boost the number of sperm that reach the fallopian tubes. The woman often takes fertility drugs to promote ovulation. So how is the process done? How are sperm collected? Well, these are some of the questions we are going to discuss. Without wasting time, let's get started.

How is IUI done?

IUI is done by inserting a thin catheter into the female cervix. After the catheter is inserted, the washed sperm is injected into the uterus. This method can bypass any obstacles in the vagina or cervical mucus that may impede conception. This is normally a prompt procedure.

How is sperm collected?

If you live near a doctor's office, you can collect sperm at home. If you do not live nearby, you will be provided a private room in the doctor's office. A sterile collection cup will be provided for men. Samples need to be sent to the doctor's office within half an hour of collection. If sent from home, the sample must be preserved at body temperature.

What happens during the surgery?

The first is a sample of semen that provides sperm washing. Your doctor may request you to come back later for insemination, depending on how long it takes for the sperm to be washed. You will be asked to take off your clothes, basically at the waist, and then lie down. The doctor will then insert the catheter and deposit the washed sperm into your uterus. You may need to raise your buttocks for 10-30 minutes.

Will IUI does hurt?

If you perform IUI at the right time in your cycle, you may only feel a slight discomfort. It should be the same as a Pap smear. Some women report that they feel cramps later, but this may be due to ovulation rather than surgery.

When is it used?

  • If the male partner has a slightly lower sperm count, it may be recommended.
Or have conditions to make it difficult for sperm to reach the egg; such as a hostile cervical mucus.
  • It is basically used by couples who have tried to have a pregnancy for at least two years but have unexplained infertility.
  • IUI can be used with women who have ovulation issues.
  • If you have problems with sexual intercourse (such as premature ejaculation or impotence), you can also use it.

Final word

Basically, IUI is the most thriving treatment for healthy couples and for those with fertility issues like low sperm counts and PCOS. However, there are many other couples who have achieved unexpected success in IUI. If you want to know if IUI is right for you, the best way is to discuss your specific fertility issues and needs with your doctor.
